Venerable Dometius of Dionysiou

Dometius (also rendered Dometios or Domitian) was a monk of Mount Athos remembered chiefly as the close companion of Saint Dionysios, founder of the Dionysiou Monastery, and as the first to succeed him in its leadership. The Athonite tradition describes him as a discerning, clairvoyant elder who lived in a church dedicated to the Theotokos near Dionysios's hermitage.

According to that tradition, Dometius and Dionysios together received a vision pointing to the site of the future monastery, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist (the Forerunner): for three successive nights both men saw a brilliant light marking where the house should be built. When pirates plundered the newly completed monastery, Dometius counselled the grieving Dionysios to seek further support from Emperor Alexios III Komnenos at Trebizond.

During Dionysios's absence on that journey, Dionysios entrusted the abbacy of the monastery to Dometius, who accepted it. On accepting, he is said to have foretold that the two would not meet again in this life — a prophecy borne out when Dionysios reposed at Trebizond while Dometius remained on the Holy Mountain. The sources place his own repose in 1405, some years after that of the founder. He is commemorated on June 25, together with Saint Dionysios.

The saint's own surviving record is slight: the Orthodox Church in America's synaxarion notes him only as a monk of Dionysiou of whom few details are preserved, and the fuller Athonite accounts treat him largely within the life of Dionysios rather than as an independent biography.
