The Holy Martyrs Eugene, Candidus, Valerian and Aquila of Trebizond
Life
Eugene, Candidus, Valerian, and Aquila were four martyrs of Trebizond, on the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor, who suffered during the persecution under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. They are commemorated on January 21.
By the accounts three of them, Valerian, Candidus, and Aquila, had hidden themselves in the hills near Trebizond to escape the persecution carried out under the commander Lysias. They were seized there and brought to trial, and together with Eugene they were martyred for confessing Christ, by tradition about the year 303.
